Michigan Parenting Plan Lawyer
Under Michigan child custody laws, both parents have the legal right to be actively involved in the lives of their children. Unfortunately, in many divorce cases, the emotions of divorce can get in the way of negotiating a reasonable child custody and visitation arrangement.
At the Law Offices of Lisa D. Stern, we work aggressively on your behalf to ensure that the best interests of your children are paramount throughout the legal process. We serve families in Northville and other communities in the northern Detroit suburbs.
Develop a Parenting Plan in Michigan
Joint child custody is the norm in Michigan, unless there are serious issues in your family such as child abuse or domestic violence. This means that you and your ex will jointly make major life decisions involving your child such as education, medical care and religious upbringing. However, joint custody does not necessarily mean that physical custody will be shared 50-50. In most cases, one parent has primary physical custody and the other parent has overnight visits according to a schedule.
You and your spouse will need to negotiate issues such as:
- Which parent will have primary physical custody during the school week?
- How many overnight visits will the other parent have on weekends, school breaks and summer vacations?
- How will holidays be shared?
If you and your spouse cannot reach an agreement, then the court will decide based on what it determines to be the best interests of your children.
Attorney Lisa Stern will explain the process and help you feel at ease about finding the solution that is best for your family.
