Michigan man paying child support for child that died in 1988

A man originally from Michigan says he paid 25 years' worth of child support before realizing that the payments were for a child who died in 1988. The man said he did not notice that the payments being withdrawn from his bank account were for the child, who died of acute meningitis at the age of three, assuming they were for an older boy he fathered with the deceased child's mother. However, that child is now 34-year-old, making the man suspicious and leading him to investigate the child support payments he had made regularly for well over two decades.

Acknowledging personal accountability after divorce

Many recently divorced individuals spend a significant amount of time trying to figure out precisely where their marriages went wrong. This is typically an important and constructive process, allowing one to pinpoint the causes of a divorce and use that knowledge to inform decisions in future relationships. However, many Michigan divorcees fail to recognize the roles they themselves played in the dissolution of their marriages, missing out on a beneficial learning opportunity in the process.

Divorce parties increasingly popular

While the idea of celebrating what can be a difficult and emotionally draining event may seem confusing and unappealing to some, divorce parties are an increasingly popular way for recently-separated individuals in Michigan and across the state to kick off the start of their new lives. According to one relationship therapist, divorce parties allow ex-spouses to "lighten up" and enjoy things their former partners would not have allowed, whether it be a shopping excursion, a day of golf or even a full-scale solo vacation.

Michigan native caught in international child custody dispute

A woman originally from Michigan is at the center of an international child custody case after she reportedly fled Turkey with her two daughters in 2007 in order to protect them from sexual abuse at the hands of their father. The woman testified at a U.S. District Court hearing, admitting that she obtained $70,000 from her parents and used the money to pay a mercenary to smuggle her and her daughters, now ages 10 and 9, over the Turkish border. She lived with the girls in a small European country for over two years before being allowed to return to the United States on single-use passports.
