Michigan court rules against same-sex partner in custody case

Potentially setting a precedent for hundreds of similar cases, the Michigan Court of Appeals recently decided that a woman may not sue her former same-sex partner for parental or visitation rights as she is not related to the child by blood. The couple was married in Canada before moving to Michigan, where they separated in 2009.

Michigan treasurer to leave office due to divorce

The man who has battled financial problems in Detroit and across the state of Michigan will step down from his post as Treasurer, claiming that his current divorce and other personal issues have made it too difficult to adequately perform his job duties. Treasurer Andy Dillon's three-year tenure has been plagued with controversy, much of it having to do with his current marriage.

Study links divorce to male health effects

A recent study titled "The Influence of Divorce on Men's Health" has revealed that men who undergo divorce may be at substantially increased risk for stroke, disease and death. The research, published in the Journal of Men's Health, claims that single men are more likely to suffer from cancer, hypertension, heart disease and even simple colds compared to their married counterparts. Even more alarming, the study suggested that divorced males have mortality rates that are 250 percent higher than married men.

FAFSA tips for divorcees

Michigan is home to hundreds of thousands of college students, with over 40,000 students enrolled at the University of Michigan alone. As such, student loans are an important and relevant topic for a considerable portion of the state's residents. Many parents applying for a child's student loan find it difficult and confusing, but the added stresses of child support and other related expenses can make the process even more intimidating for divorced parents.
