Recent research published by the University of Buffalo suggests that the use of alcohol only has significant effects on the health of a marriage when spouses consume differing amounts. This marked the latest in a number of studies concerning the connection between drinking habits and divorce.

After mother abducts children, police give father the runaround

In divorce, it is often necessary to make difficult compromises. When these compromises happen in the area of child custody and a parent feels the court has not considered their child's best interests, it can be tempting to take matters into one's own hands. However, interference with child custody or visitation can result in charges of contempt of court or even child abduction. One Detroit-area woman may be about to learn this the hard way.

Court grants parental rights to lesbian egg donor

In a move that could have far-reaching effects and establish legal precedents in Michigan and other states, a state Supreme Court ruled in favor of a woman who donated an egg cell which was used to artificially inseminate her partner, with the two women separating after the child's birth. There was disagreement on whether state laws prohibit anonymous egg or sperm donors from claiming child custody or parental rights. The court was divided, but ultimately handed down a 4-3 ruling.

Child returned to parents after charges dropped

When Michigan passed the Medical Marijuana Act, it opened the doors for many to receive an alternative form of treatment for ailments. However, it also created a possible issue with state agencies whose role it is to protect children. When Child Protective Services feels there is an issue in a home, they have the legal authority to remove the child from the home, setting up a child custody battle between the agency and the parents. This is what happened with one Michigan couple; fortunately for the parents, the ending is a happy one.
