The status of same-sex marriage in Michigan

On March 21, 2014, District Judge Bernard Friedman issued a historic ruling making Michigan the 18th state in the nation to allow gays and lesbians to join in matrimony.    As stated in Deboer v. Snyder,  Case No. 12-CV-10285, " Article I, section 25 of the Michigan Constitution and its implementing statutes are unconstitutional because they violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution."

When a divorce is in the best interests of the child

Many Michigan couples stay together for the sake of their children. Despite the yelling, fighting and disagreements, they vow to stick it out and wait to divorce until the children move out or are at least in high school. However, studies show that kids are not really better off staying in such a toxic environment and that divorce will not necessarily scar them for life.

Adultery can have consequences during a Michigan divorce

If you're going through a divorce in Michigan, the news from an April 17 report may interest you. Take for instance the fact that you could be getting a divorce due to your significant other's infidelity. Did you know that it's actually illegal to cheat on your spouse in some states?

How a high-conflict divorce can cause damage to children

When many Michigan parents divorce, the main concern should be the children. However, many couples focus on seeking revenge on the other spouse. They may have felt wronged in the relationship and now want to do what they can to make life as bitter as possible for the other party. Unfortunately, nearly one-third of divorces involve parental conflict of such a high degree that children begin to suffer emotionally.

Man is found, arrested for owed child support of $555,000

Many Michigan parents dutifully pay child support in order to ensure that their children are taken care of. Unfortunately, many others refuse to pay up and even evade police until they are finally caught. One man, who has been on the run for five years, was recently found and arrested for failing to pay child support. The total? More than half a million dollars.
