How is child custody determined in different divorce situations?

On Behalf of Lisa D. Stern | Nov 2, 2017 | Child Custody |

When faced with having to make decisions about child custody, Michigan parents like you will have a lot of options to sort through. Will you have joint custody? What will your visitation schedule look like? This is where professionals like Lisa Stern can step in, helping you decide which options would be the best for you, and most importantly, for your child.

First of all, your options for custody arrangements will often depend on the makeup of your family. For example, unmarried parents who are splitting up will have a different set of hurdles to cross than parents who have been married and are getting a divorce. LGBTQ couples will also have their own set of problems to sort through. If grandparents are involved, this can create more unusual situations. All of these scenarios must be addressed individually.

A few things bind all of these custody cases together, though. For example, custody is determined based on the best interest of the child. Who will be able to provide a sturdier home environment? Who lives in an area with better schooling options or job opportunities? Which parent has been determined more fit to raise a child by the court? These will all be taken into consideration.

What works for one family might not necessarily work for yours. This is why determining your child custody options can be difficult, since you will essentially need to tailor them to your unique family and situation. To get started with learning what options are available to you and how you can use them to suit your needs, you can take a look at our web page. We specialize in child custody cases, and work on an individual basis to help you find exactly what you need.
